Girl stripped naked in an Ahmadabad school: NHRC calls for a report from the Gujarat Government

New Delhi Dated: 7th July, 2011


The National Human Rights Commission has issued a notice to the Secretary, Department of Education, Government of Gujarat on a complaint alleging that in the Islamic School in the Shahpur area, Ahmedabad, Gujarat a six year old girl was stripped naked and locked in the school toilet for hours because her handwriting was bad. He has been asked to submit a report within four weeks in the matter.

Quoting a media report published on the 5th July, 2011 the complainant has also alleged that the girl was threatened that she would be paraded naked in the school compound if she complained about the incident.

The Commission has observed that it is the duty and responsibility of the teachers as well as the entire governance machinery to provide the children /students with the best possible ambience to enable them achieve highest level of academic and personality development. If the children are exposed to such situations, their personality development will be severely hampered. The allegations, if true, amount to serious violation of human rights of the child.
