New Delhi.

Sir,

Greetings from PVCHR.

Please refer to the news in the link : http://ibnlive.in.com/news/rti-activist-akhil-gogoi-arrested-in-guwahati/162366-3.html

According to this report, the authorities arrested  Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti (KMSS) leader Akhil Gogoi from the Press Club on Friday afternoon when he was addressing a crowded press meet.

Police arrested Gogoi from the Guwahati Press Club in connection with the Dispur clash that left three killed and over 30 injured. He has been charged with 10 cases of rioting, arsoning, damaging public property and illegal meeting. The Assam government is also considering slapping NSA against him.

A protest rally against the eviction drive by the Assam government. led by Akhil Gogoi in Dispur allegedly turned violent on Wednesday, during which at least three people, including a nine-year-old child, died in police action.

The police, however, are in denial of having fired in the crowd.

Sir, attack on human rights defenders like Mr Gogoi is a matter of grave concern. It seems that the state is determined to suppress all non violent protest.

On behalf of PVCHR, I request you to immediately intervene, investigate the matter and take necessary measures to ensure exercise of the democratic right of the people of the state. The life and security of the defenders like Mr Gogoi must be protected at any cost.

With regards,

Dr. Mohanlal Panda
