Man fakes dad's death to claim 50 lakh insurance

Jatin Takkar, TNN Jun 28, 2011, 08.56pm IST

KURUKSHETRA: A Delhi resident was arrested here on Sunday for faking the death of his America-resident father to claim Rs 50 lakh insurance money.

To make the death look real, the son cremated a dog at the cremation ground in Pehowa in the district and also performed his "last rites".

The accused, identified as Chetan Oberoi, resident of Vikaspuri in Delhi, planned this in June last year with the help of six others, police said.

The matter came to light when investigation officer Phool Singh of an America-based insurance company approached Pehowa Police for confirmation of details. Subsequently, the police investigated the matter and chanced upon the shocking incident.

A team of Pehowa Police arrested Oberoi from his apartment in Vikaspuri, New Delhi, on Sunday. His NRI father Janakraj Oberoi is at present in America with his elder son, Harsh, police sources said.

According to the statement made by Chetan, his father died of heart attack at Saraswati Ghat in Pehowa on June 22, 2010, during a visit to Saraswati Ghat from Delhi, investigating police officers said.

To execute his plan successfully, Chetan took the help of a priest, Ram Lal, of the Pehowa cremation ground. The last rites after the so-called death were performed at Pehowa by priests Hemant and Roshan Lal, who also helped complete the rituals of pindan. Pehowa resident Satpal Singh signed as witness in this fake death episode, the police said.

A case has been registered with Pehowa police station on January 23, 2011, against Chetan and the six others for making a fake death certificate.

"We have already taken Chetan Oberoi on police remand and investigations are on into the details of this fake death of his father," said Yashwant Yadav, SHO of Pehowa police station.

Sir, on behalf of PVCHR, I request you to look into the matter and take necessary action.

With regards,
