Sir,
Greetings from PVCHR.

NID suspends three students for ragging junior in hostel
TNN Jun 29, 2011, 12.32am IST
AHMEDABAD: Out of the three students who were involved in an incident of ragging a first-year student at the National Institute of Design (NID), the two under-graduate students have been suspended from the academic programme and barred from entering the hostel for one semester.
The third, who is a PG student, has been allowed to attend his classes but has been barred from the hostel campus for a semester.
The institute announced the disciplinary measures on Tuesday following the submission of post investigation reports by the institute's anti-ragging committee.
The post graduate student who will be allowed to attend classes will be put under strict surveillance for a year, said institute officials. The institute will monitor his attendance, performance and behavior and if he is found to be involved in any such case again, he too will be immediately removed from the academic programme.
A complaint of ragging was lodged by a first year student on June 17. The institute had immediately suspended the three students, who were accused for ragging, from hostel and the academic area. The first year student complained that the three students had barged into his room at night and forced him to smoke cigarettes and abused him verbally.
NID registrar, Vijaya Deshmukh who is also a part of the anti ragging committee said, "The committee spoke to all the students whose names came forth during the enquiry and their involvements were probed. We also spoke to the entire batch of first year students of the undergraduate programme."
Deshmukh said, "The punitive actions have been decided by the institute after taking a complete view of the seriousness of the reported incidence, level and degree of abhorrent behavior by the senior students involved in the acts of ragging."
This is not the first time that NID has received complaints of ragging from its students. In 2009 on June 19, a student of toy and game design at NID was suspended after a female student complained of ragging saying that the student passed lewd remarks to her. On June 18, 2008, NID expelled two students for ragging a first year student. The first year student who was brutally ragged went back home in Kolkata.
Sir, on behalf of PVCHR, I request you to look into the matter and take necessary action.
With regards,
Dr. Mohanlal Panda
